AI That Actually Answers the Phone (and More)

AI voice agents, automation, and analytics, customized for island and mainland businesses that can't afford to miss a call during rush season, but can't staff a 24/7 front desk either.

How This Works

As a partner with OTG Consulting, I consult on what actually fits your business and connect you with the provider that delivers it. OTG is a consultancy that presents the services of other providers rather than delivering them itself.

The capabilities described on this page are delivered and supported by the service provider you select, not by Paul Petro IO or OTG Consulting. My role is helping you choose well and staying reachable after the contract is signed.

I led DevOps and software development teams at Lumen on infrastructure carrying 24 million requests a second, and the lesson that stuck was about noise. On one national network we cut alerting by 90 percent. The network did not get quieter, it got legible: the alarms left over actually meant something.

AI on a phone system has the same failure mode. A voice agent that escalates everything is an expensive answering machine. One that escalates nothing will lose you a customer at the worst possible moment. So when I evaluate a provider's voice agent, the question I push on is where the handoff line sits and who is allowed to move it later. That single setting decides whether the thing helps you or embarrasses you in front of a guest.

AI Voice Agents

Never Miss a Call Again

The most requested piece: a voice agent that picks up every call, understands what the caller needs, and either handles it or hands it to a real person.

  • 24/7 coverage: never miss a call, even after hours or during lunch rush.
  • Intelligent routing that understands what a caller needs and sends them to the right place.
  • Automatically captures name, number, reason for calling, and context, so nothing gets scribbled on a sticky note and lost.
  • Smart scheduling that books appointments directly against your business rules.
  • Keeps your greeting and tone consistent, every call, every time.
  • Escalates anything complex straight to a real person. This covers gaps, it doesn't replace your team.
  • Multi-lingual support for a visitor-heavy island market.
  • Works with the phone system you already have, no rip-and-replace.

Questions I Get

Questions I Get About AI Voice Agents

Will it handle visitors who do not speak English well?

This is a more important question here than the vendors' generic materials suggest, and it is worth testing rather than trusting. Oahu businesses field calls from visitors across the Asia-Pacific region, and language support ranges from genuinely strong to barely functional depending on the platform. I ask for a live test in the languages you actually hear, not a list of supported languages on a slide. The gap between the two is often wide.

What stops it from giving a caller wrong information?

The scope you set, and how conservatively it is configured to escalate. A voice agent should be confident about hours, directions, availability, and where a booking stands, and it should hand off the moment a question moves past that. An agent that escalates everything is an expensive answering machine, and one that escalates nothing will eventually tell a guest something untrue with total confidence. Where that line sits, and who is allowed to move it later, is the setting I push hardest on during evaluation.

Does the time difference make after-hours coverage worse?

It makes it more valuable, which is the usual reason businesses here look at this. Hawaii does not observe daylight saving time, so the mainland offset shifts twice a year, and a meaningful share of your calls arrive from people who are awake while Honolulu is asleep. Those calls currently go to voicemail, and most of them do not leave one. Covering that window is often where a voice agent pays for itself.

Will it sound like a robot to my customers?

Some of them do, and you should hear a real call before you commit rather than a produced demo reel. The technology has moved quickly and the difference between platforms is audible. The bigger risk is not the voice, it is a rigid script that cannot absorb an unusual question. A caller forgives a synthetic voice. They do not forgive being trapped in a loop that will not let them reach a person.

What if we already have a phone system we like?

Then keep it. In most cases a voice agent sits in front of the phone system you already have, and rip-and-replace is not a prerequisite. I would treat any vendor who insists on replacing a working platform as a vendor selling their stack rather than solving your problem.
